Route 66, often called the "Mother Road," holds significant historical importance as one of the original highways in the United States Highway System. It was established on November 11, 1926, and originally ran 2,448 miles from Chicago, Illinois, to Santa Monica, California. Route 66 soon became a critical artery for economic development in the small towns that it passed through. The highway brought travelers, tourists, and commerce to these towns, contributing to their growth and prosperity. Route 66 became an iconic symbol of American culture, representing freedom, adventure, and the open road. This cultural legacy is evident in the music, literature, and media that celebrate the highway. One small community Winona, west of Winslow, was one of several Arizona towns mentioned in the song “Route 66,” written by Bobby Troup in 1946.
